Loewe

The Madrid Leather House

Founded in 1846 in Madrid, Loewe is Spain's oldest luxury house — an atelier built on an obsession with leather as a living material, from royal commissions to the geometric Puzzle bag.

The Heritage

Founded in 1846 in Madrid as a workshop of Spanish leather craftsmen, Loewe was consolidated in 1872 when Enrique Loewe Roessberg, a German leather artisan, joined the atelier and gave the house his name. For nearly two centuries it has dressed the Spanish court and pursued an obsession with leather as a living material.

Named a supplier to the Spanish Crown, Loewe built its reputation on supple napa and the boxy Amazona bag, introduced in 1975 as a feminine reinterpretation of a men's briefcase. The house's anagram — four interlocking L's designed by Vicente Vela — became its seal, pressed blind into the leather.

Acquired by LVMH in 1996, Loewe entered a defining new chapter in 2013 under creative director Jonathan Anderson, whose debut Puzzle bag, constructed from forty-three geometric leather pieces, became the house's modern icon. Under Anderson, Loewe reframed centuries of Spanish leathermaking as quiet, sculptural invention.
